Career Transition Series: Pivoting Outside the UN System

In light of the evolving organizational landscape across the UN system, building on the UN80 reform agenda’s emphasis on transformation and collaboration, IOM, UN Geneva, UN Secretariat in New York, UNDP, UNHCR and WHO have launched the Career Transition Series: Pivoting Outside the UN System.  This inter-agency initiative responds to the growing need for practical career transition support, helping UN personnel navigate change and explore professional opportunities in the private and non-UN sectors.

Whether you are directly affected or proactively planning your next steps, this series will provide you with practical tools, expert insights, and the confidence to successfully pivot in today's evolving job market.

Upcoming Session:

Session 18: Reflect, Explore, Prepare: Your Next Career Chapter

Session Description: Navigating a career transition can bring uncertainty, but it can also create opportunities to reflect on your strengths, explore new possibilities and prepare for what comes next.

 

As part of the Inter-Agency Career Transition Series: Pivoting Outside the UN System, we invite colleagues to join Reflect, Explore, Prepare: Your Next Career Chapter, a series of five interactive sessions designed to support personnel facing separation or who have already separated from the UN system.

 

The series focuses on exploring career opportunities beyond the UN, helping participants translate their experience into new professional contexts, strengthen their job-search strategies, expand their networks and discover alternative career pathways.

 

What can you expect?

 

Five practical, 90-minute sessions covering:

 

  1. Building What Comes Next: Clarity and Purpose During Career Transitions - Refresh on your dreams, clarify what really matters to you, and build a mindset that invites growth and learning (27 October)
  2. Career Horizons: The 'Start Your Business' (SYB) Framework for Transitioning Professionals - Discover entrepreneurship as a potential career pathway (10 November)
  3. AI for Job Searching and Networking - Explore how AI tools can support your job search and networking efforts (24 November)
  4. Never Search Alone: An Introduction to the Free Job Search Council Programme - Learn how peer support and structured collaboration can strengthen your job search (1 December)
  5. My Story - My Future - Owning your career, building future skills and looking beyond the UN system (8 December)

 

Each session will offer practical insights, tools and resources, with opportunities for reflection, exercises and questions.

Session 19: Career move to Valencia: Tips for Staff and Partners 

Date & Time: 25 November, 14:30-16:00 (Geneva)

Session Description: This session covers key aspects of relocation to Valencia with a focus on partners and family support. It introduces the city of Valencia and its services, outlines administrative requirements, and addresses employment and education support for partners and family members. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage directly with relevant stakeholders, ask questions, and explore available support services and resources.

Session 20: Career move to Brindisi: Tips for Staff and Partners
