Executive Management Programme

Course objectives

The UN System Executive Management Programme is a unique management learning experience tailor-made for UN managers across the UN system. It provides practical tools and knowledge to help address UN complex realities and deliver results effectively, both in challenging field locations and at headquarters.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Create high-performing teams, by motivating and coaching staff, and supporting their career development. Monitor and evaluate staff performance and address under-performance in a constructive manner.
  • Translate overall visions into realistic goals, by planning strategically, implementing result-based management systems, mitigating risks, and managing resources and funds successfully.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, senior managers and peers. Build and maintain long-term partnership with key stakeholders.
  • Create an UN inter-agency peer network.

This programme consists of:

  • An initial 360-degree assessment, based on the UN Leadership Framework, incorporating feedback from peers, supervisees and supervisors.
  • 2 one-on-one coaching sessions with an experienced coach (90 and 60 minutes each).
  • 1 orientation module and 9 e-learning weekly modules including online activities, synchronous webinar sessions and discussions with peers and tutors (around 5 or 6 hours per module/per week).
  • A 1-week online workshop to work on authentic cases, collectively address challenges and seek solutions.

Following the end of the EMP workshop, participants will continue their development journey supported by the “Tracking for the Future” tool + additional coaching as follows:

  • Step 1: Reflect and Review (9 months following the end of the EMP)

Participants will reflect on the integration of learning and related behavior change, and prioritize further areas to focus on with input from their manager/supervisor.

  • Step 2: Behavioral Tracker (repeated 2-3 times over a 9-month period)

2-3 specific future-focused behaviors will be evaluated by 2-3 nominated co-workers.

  • Step 3: Review and Complete (initiated 9 months after Step 1)

Guided by a coaching session, participants will evaluate improvements and changes, revisit their priorities and identify what’s next in terms of development.
